What is ECU remapping?

Engine or ECU remapping on todays ECUs can be carried out by simply updating the software, achieved by downloading then uploading the ‘remapped’ software either through the OBDII diagnostic port, or using a Tri-core programming module for the new series 17 ECU’s, introduced on some vehicle’s from 2010.

When ECU remapping you’re modifying the software in order to achieve better performance, whether it be for more power or better fuel economy, as well as improving emissions.

Below are  quick links to our paragraphs based on the most commonly asked questions with regards to ECU Remapping.

How does ECU remapping work?

A modern vehicle ECU, controls many different aspects of the engine, such as spark timing and fuel injection. The ECU may also control electronic throttle control, valve timing, boost control (in turbocharged engines), speed governor and the electronic stability control system.

ECU remapping is the process of adjusting these parameters to optimise engine performance, resulting in higher performance both increasing BHP and torque whilst improving mpg. Customised files for a particular vehicle do not alter the other diagnostic parameters that are set by manufactures and all diagnostic trouble codes(DTC’s) remain unchanged.

Cars fitted with a turbo charger or supercharger will have the boost threshold increased, with dramatic gains if the standard turbo boost is low PSI. All modern engines can be tuned in this way whether naturally aspirated or turbo enhanced, both petrol and diesel versions. Turbo charged diesel versions generally experience the greatest gains.

Performance Remapping

What gains can i expect from a performance remap? This all depends on your vehicle and engine type.

All you need to do is send us a text message or drop us an email via the contact form with your vehicle registration number and we will advise you the pre & post remap figures and a fixed quotation for the service.

Economy Remapping

We also provide an economy remap option which focuses more on fuel efficiency as opposed to performance. Although the remap does not focus on performance, economy remaps will improve low gear acceleration and driving experience by removing the limitation placed on engine performance by the vehicle manufacturer.

What improvement can you expect to see on fuel economy? This answer is difficult to quantify as it depends on many factors, tyre pressure, regular servicing but mainly the way the vehicle is driven. A vehicle driven conservatively will be more economical then a vehicle driven with performance in mind.

An economy remap can provide saving of up to 20% on annual fuel costs.

Should i have an Economy or Performance Remap?

This is the most common question from customers during the remapping process.
Although this is a totally individual decision, through experience the majority of customers who take the performance remap notice the same or even better fuel consumption. Just remember that fuel economy output is greatly dependant on the driver of the vehicle. The more economical you drive the vehicle, the better the fuel economy will be.

Is ECU Remapping Safe?

Remapping is perfectly safe if it is a developed and tested map. All of our maps have been developed using vehicle’s on a rolling road to confirm the quoted BHP and torque output.

There is no denying that remapping will put more stress on certain components. Your turbo will be worked a little harder, the clutch may wear a little more than usual.
However the remap we be within acceptable parameters and we never push performance to the absolute limit, even if asked by customers. Of course if you are looking for something with a little more spice than usual, we can cater for your individual taste.

Why Manufacturers do not Provide a Mapped ECU from Standard

There are many reasons for this such as keeping a protective margin within the engine to safeguard against warranty issues. Mainly though it is because manufacturer can sell a new vehicle with higher BHP for a higher price.
Most manufacturers provide a least two different options for the same model and the only difference is the ECU software has been configured to produce less BHP

Stage 1&2 Remapping

Another reason to change the ECU map is if there are engine, intake, or exhaust modifications to the car. These “bolt-on” modifications alter the way that the engine flows, often causing the air to fuel ratio to change. Without remapping, the fuel tables and some of the performance gains from the modifications, may not be realized.

A poorly tuned ECU can result in decreased performance and driveability, as well as possibly causing engine damage. Your choice of tuner is therefore extremely important and cheap alternatives must be avoided at ALL cost.

Why choose AutoSphere UK for Remapping?

MAIN REASON: We are a master tuner & Quantum Tuning agent

Most ECU remapping companies are using slave equipment which only allows them to download an encrypted file and send to another company who are tuning your car, they have no access to see the original file and check for previous file modifications. AutoSphere UK are master tuners and we download, check, verify and tune every vehicle file individually based on experience . We can tell you if a vehicle has been tuned before and if it has been tuned correctly. We can even return your vehicle ECU back to manufacturer standard.

These small differences set us out from the rest of the competition who have built their business on basic equipment and small industry knowledge.

We are also a Quantum Tuning agent who are the biggest and best tuning company in the UK, our performance & economy remaps are unrivaled and to show our confidence in the service, we provide a full 28 day money back guarantee if you are not happy with the service.

Other providers are using cheaper file providers or even worse they are buying a totally generic (off the shelf) map and loading into your vehicle. This could result in only some of the required “maps” being adjusted and can result in irreversible damage to your engine.

AutoSphere UK Remapping Process

On every vehicle we perform a full diagnostic check to ensure there are no faults present. If there are faults present then we will advise you to have this corrected before we remap the vehicle. This will ensure that the remap will be as effective as possible once it has been installed.

If your vehicle is running smoothly, then we will connect to the ECU via the diagnostic port and download and save the ECU files. The file will then be customised to your requirements and uploaded back to the ECU. If you have a new style 17 series ECU then it will contain a Tricore processor that requires the ECU to be removed from the vehicle for programming.

The remapping is completed and you will notice the effects immediately. If however you are not happy with the service within 28 days of purchase, then we will return and reload your previous ECU file to your vehicle and refund your money.

If you have any questions regarding this service then please contact us to enquire.
